INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS / Tutor: Gerry Engwerda
Keep up to date with international current affairs and join in a presentation and discussion about how history and events worldwide impact on our global village. Alternate Tuesdays from 31st July, starting at 1.00pm. Topics for Semester 2 include ‘The history and evolution of the English language’, ‘Plate Tectonics’, ‘The geopolitics of energy’, ‘The apocalyptic movements’, ‘Demographics and the future world’, ‘The Politics of Youth’, ‘The decline of the West?’, and ‘Islam, science and modernity’. |

CONVERSATIONS / Tutor: Michael Evans
Semester 2 of Conversations with Michael Evans at the helm of this stimulating course based on insights from the works of Philosophers ancient and modern into a range of topics. The topics are chosen by participants as the Semester progresses and each one is considered in an historical, ethical and personal context by the group. Reading lists for additional research and inquiry are offered by Michael. |

TASTES / Group Leader: Joyce Wilkinson
Tastes is loosely based around the enjoyment of food and conversations relating to food. We may go to a cafe or restaurant, be hosted at a member’s house for an event, or have a talk and demonstration about some aspect or business involved with supplying, growing or serving food. So far this year we have visited Hub 62 in Chiltern, the King River Cafe at Oxley, had a talk from the owners of the Stanley Organic Chestnut farm and shared a beautiful lunch using local produce. There has been a “Mocktails and Cocktails” early evening event, and Christmas in July celebrations. |
4TH THURSDAY WALK / Group Leader: Gerri Boland
These popular and convivial walks cover different terrain, distance and degree of difficulty each month, but always easy-to-moderate. Often ‘dog friendly. Individual local walks are notified, with meeting places and times determined closer to the actual time of the walk. (Usually 09.30 at Quercus.) |

Visits to different gardens within the Indigo Shire. The hosts will show off their gardens with a tour, followed by a Q&A about aspects of the particular garden as well a general exchange of gardening tips between the group over morning tea at the property. We return to the old Stanley Primary School site for our Christmas Party. Local caterer Sean Duggan at Mojo Catering will provide a spit roast meal consisting of beef, pork and lamb, three salads, baked potatoes with sour cream, and various breads and condiments. Cost is $30.00pp. Indigo U3A will provide pre-meal nibbles, wine, beer, soft drinks, tea and coffee. Contributions of something sweet to share from members attending the event will be most welcome, but not essential. |

HANDMADE JEWELLERY DEMONSTRATION / Tutor: Gemma Grace
https://gemmagrace.co Join local contemporary jeweller Gemma Grace as she creates a piece of handmade jewellery in her home studio. Observe the production process of a piece from start to finish and learn about a range of traditional and modern goldsmithing techniques. Gemma will focus on her signature technique of compressed granulation which involves a unique approach to the ancient technique of granulation. The address of the studio will be advised separately to enrolees. |

ARTISTS OF THE HEIDE CIRCLE / Tutors: Ellen Evans and David Geryga
Everyone has heard of Sidney Nolan, even if only via an awareness of his iconic Ned Kelly series. The British art historian Sir Kenneth Clark considered him to be Australia’s greatest painter. John and Sunday Reid were patrons of modern art located at Heide in Bulleen. For some years after World War 2 they fostered the work of a group of artists who were to become known as the Heide Circle: Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, John Percival and Danila Vassilieff. This presentation by Ellen Evans and David Geryga will show the distinctive nature of the artists’ work and how they came together under the patronage of the Reids. |

PLANT-BASED NUTRITION / Course Leader: Anni Turnbull
Anni Turnbull will present this stimulating discussion and demonstration about plant-based eating, and offer tastings of healthy vegan food. 7th August – ‘An introduction to plant-based eating’ In this first session Anni explains the differences between plant-based eating styles and discusses the risks and benefits of each. She invites participants to enjoy 'Tasting the Rainbow' at afternoon tea. 21st August – ‘Plant-based lifestyle and chronic illness’ Anni continues her short course, discussing the management of common chronic illnesses with the assistance of a totally plan- based diet. She offers more delicious healthy samples for participants to enjoy. Research references and recipes will be available. |

ADVANCED CARE PLANNING (2) Presenters: Helen McGowan, Solicitor and John McColl, Practice Manager, Beechworth Surgery (Postponed.)
This session is a more formal follow up to the session presented in April 2018 which focussed on personal values and how they may influence decision making around end of life care. Helen McGowan will start the session by answering questions about the legal side of Advanced Care Planning, and John McColl will then discuss the process of uploading your Advanced Care Directives to your electronic (eHealth) record. |

HEARTS OF GOLD & MINDS OF METTLE Mary Rawes to Mariette Craig, Stanley Women of the 19th Century / Coordinator: Frances Baker
The little-known stories of Stanley’s women of the 19th Century are presented in this exhibition. Of diverse skills and occupations – in horticulture, gold mining and retail – these resilient women include a group who signed the 1891 Monster Petition for women‘s suffrage. The volunteers from the Stanley Athenaeum are very kindly opening this popular exhibition for U3A members and will provide afternoon tea. Cost for entry to the exhibition and afternoon tea is $5.00. |

BALD ARCHY EXHIBITION, COROWA ARTS SPACE and COROWA FEDERATION MUSEUM / Coordinator: Joyce Wilkinson
The Bald Archy Prize has become an eccentric icon on the Australian art calendar featuring irreverent comic and satirical images of well-known Australians. The Corowa Federation Museum displays various exhibits related to the Federation of Australia, copies of art works by Tom Roberts and Aboriginal artist Tommy McCrae plus displays of horse drawn vehicles and locally manufactured agricultural implements. |

WAR GRAVES OF AMBON / Course Leader: Carole O'Neill
Past President and Life member of Indigo U3A, Carole O'Neill has thoroughly researched the history of war graves on the island of Ambon, Indonesia. In her first presentation she will focus on the building of a cemetery. In her second presentation Carole's topic will be 'Sandakan to Ranau - a forgotten death march'. |

THE EUROPEANS : The Paradigm Shift from Human Rights to Common Sense / Presenter: John Shilling
A few years ago, a contributor to The London Review of Books wrote, "For the first time in its history, the European Left no longer has a project". Not so: the Left has never lacked a project. When it divorced its white working-class constituency, it did so in order to channel its passion into the greatest of all social projects: to make amends for colonialism and WWII by declaring all accidents of birth, wherever they might be found, null and void. Redress could be had simply by migrating to Europe: the European taxpayer would provide all necessary resources. Some of the visible figures behind this settlement were Mitterrand, Blair, the Brothers Miliband, Soros, Juncker, Schulz, Merkel, the hapless Hollande, and now Macron and Pope Francis. This was to be 'The End of History' and the beginning of 'Otherly Love'. The great migration crisis duly followed in September 2015, with everyone from Hollywood to the captains of global commerce chiming in with adulatory support for Angela Merkel.
